Pega Case LifeCycle Design
Pega 7’s case life cycle design is a modelling technique that enables you to quickly model and demonstrate a high-level process design within Pega. By using the case lifecycle design and management the business executives can capture their vision exactly how they describe and think about it.
Business applications should function in the same way business users naturally think about and describe their work.
With the Pega 7 Case Designer, you design your application by describing the stages within a case type, and then define the steps or processes that happen in each stage.
Case:
A Case essentially represents work that an organization performs to achieve an expected outcome. So a Case is nothing but a work.
Example:Opening a new Bank Account in a Bank or Processing an Insurance Claim.
Case Type:
The case type is a template for creating and processing the cases. When a new transaction starts, a new case is created based on the case type definition. The case processes as defined in case type to complete the work.
Example: Applying a Home Loan in a Bank is a Case and Home Loan is a Case Type.
Thus Home Loan is a template for applying a Home Loan in a Bank.
Stage:
A stage is a first level of organizing all the different tasks required to complete work associated with a case. By stages we can understand that what must happen in sequence, and what can happen in parallel during case processing. It consists of tasks and processes within it.
Primary and Alternate stages
Primary Stages - stages that lead to the expected outcome. The sequence of Primary stages is known as happy path.
Example: Pre-Approval, Investigation, Approval and Disbursement are the primary stage as it progress the case to deliver the expected outcome.
Alternate Stages - stages that are not part of 'normal' processing and also be sequenced into the primary stage.
Example: Rejection is the alternate stage that is not a part of happy path and used to handle exception if the home loan is rejected.
Process:
A process is a way in which work may be completed. Most cases are made up of multiple tasks and processes that drive the case toward its outcome. Organized within the stage and define one or more paths the case must follow. It consists of set of tasks (Steps).
Example: Home Loan Application, Home Loan Fee, Home Loan Document Valuation, Home Loan Sanction, Home Loan Disbursement and Home Loan Rejection are the processes within the stages in Case Type Home Loan. Each process defines a path to progress the case flow. And each process consists of series of steps in it.
Step:
A step or a task in a stage can represent a single assignment, a multi-step process, or another case. A step can be an action that a user performs, an automatic action performed by the application, or other processes that contain a separate set of actions.
Example: The below highlighted are the steps within the process which are the actions that are performed by the user (Assignment) or other processes (which consists of series of assignments within it) or even can be any automatic action by pega (Change Stage in order to move from one stage to another stage).
